A Trip to the Gran Prix

In 1997 the IEEE International Conference on Communications was in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, the same week as the Canadian Gran Prix. I was already scheduled to attend ICC since there were several papers and a tutorial I wanted to see, so it was a no-brainer to stay for the Gran Prix. By the time I went to get tickets, though, the only decent seats were in one of the bronze sections on the back stretch. As you can see, though, our little section of the course had the St. Lawrence river and the Montreal skyline as a backdrop.

This shot was taken during the opening lap with Michael Schumacher in the lead followed by Jacques Villenueve and then one of the Jordans. Villenueve disappointed his home crowd by taking himself out on the next lap with a rookie mistake, allowing Schumacher to go on to the win.
